Buttercross, Winchester Buttercross, Winchester

Buttercross, Winchester, Hampshire.

A print of the famous Buttercross in Winchester High Street, one the the oldest in England, by Brighton-based artist/illustrator Peter Spells - a modern twist on the iconic style of the vintage railway prints.

In the Middle Ages, the Buttercross was in the centre of the market and was the focal point for civic ceremonies. It was erected in the C15th and the upper part was restored in 1865. It is surmounted by a high pinnacle and a cross and there altogether 20 statues in the various recesses. It is a matter of luck that the Buttercross has survived; it was almost sold as a garden ornament in 1770.

Supplied backed and wrapped, measuring 14" x 11".

Exclusive to Kingsgate Books & Prints.
