Buttercross; greetings card

Buttercross, Winchester
zoom Zoom image

Greetings card reproduced from a 1920 watercolour by Alfred Robert Quinton (1853-1934), of the Buttercross in Winchester, Hampshire.

In the Middle Ages, the Buttercross was in the centre of the market and was the focal point for civic ceremonies. It was erected in the C15th and the upper part was restored in 1865. It is surmounted by a high pinnacle and a cross and there altogether 20 statues in the various recesses. It is a matter of luck that the Buttercross has survived; it was almost sold as a garden ornament in 1770.

7" x 5", supplied wrapped with an envelope.
